I tried this free tax program because the one I used last year suddenly wanted $50 — so I figured, why not. Used it for our household return (wages, a few investment sales, and the premium subsidy reconciliation) and for the most part entering info felt straightforward. Then the Federal bottom line popped up with a number about $1,200 higher than it should be. I clicked the little "why" and the worksheet (Qualified Dividends & Capital Gains, line 25) showed the right tax, but the summary showed a clearly different, wrong total. I checked with two other services — same correct figure there — so yes, something was off. Also, at first the app didn’t factor in the marketplace/credit overage we had, which made me worry about audits. I was pretty sceptical at that point. I contacted support, they actually responded, identified a calculation ordering bug, pushed a fix, and after that the total matched the others and I could file for free. Not perfect — it shook my confidence — but once corrected it did the job and saved me the $50 I’d otherwise have paid.
