Shoebox taxes and a sigh

Communication

“returns rejected — must mail returns.” No reason, no details, just that line. I called the IRS and the site; both were vague. Annoying, sure. I ended up paying to FedEx the state and federal packages (something like $24), which stung. What bothered me most was the lack of explanation from the site — if their checker said it was okay, what failed? That said, after the paper thing was mailed things finally moved and I’m relieved it worked out in the end. So I’m glad it wasn’t a total disaster, even though customer support could be way better. Will I use it again? Maybe, but I’ll keep a backup plan and expect surprises.

Kitchen-table relief

App & Portal

I remember sitting at my kitchen table, a cup of tea gone lukewarm, when I finally felt okay about it. A colleague had sent me a link the week before and said try it, so I did. At first I liked the clean layout. It's simple to read. No dense tax jargon to trip me up. What sealed it was being able to check my return online a couple of times before anything was sent in — I could tweak things, give my input, and then submit only when I felt right about it. That moment, clicking send with a clear head, made me relaxed. They handled my info like they respected it, which matters. It wasn't flawless — some payment options took a minute to find — but the price was fair and the first filing was even free for me under the limit, which I appreciated. I told my sister about it. I’d use it again.

Skipping this one

App & Portal

I almost gave it a shot because, hey, free is tempting, right? I was already annoyed that my usual free service suddenly wanted $50 this year, so I thought I’d try something else. I filled in everything — personal details, income, deductions — and it seemed normal at first. Then the federal total popped up way higher than expected. Like, over a thousand dollars higher. That’s when the doubt turned into full-on concern. I clicked the explanation and the worksheet showed a different number, the correct number, but the program used the bigger figure. I checked with two other services to make sure I wasn’t going crazy. Nope — the software was off. So you get to file “for free,” but the glitch could cost you a lot if you trust it. Also, it recalculated our healthcare marketplace reconciliation oddly, another red flag that makes me uneasy about audits or extra hassles. I want to like a free option, and I wanted this to be fine, but it wasn’t. If you’ve had bad software before, you’ll recognize the feeling. I’d skip this and go with something more reliable, even if it costs a bit.

Almost gave me a heart attack, but saved me in the end

Service

I tried this free tax program because the one I used last year suddenly wanted $50 — so I figured, why not. Used it for our household return (wages, a few investment sales, and the premium subsidy reconciliation) and for the most part entering info felt straightforward. Then the Federal bottom line popped up with a number about $1,200 higher than it should be. I clicked the little "why" and the worksheet (Qualified Dividends & Capital Gains, line 25) showed the right tax, but the summary showed a clearly different, wrong total. I checked with two other services — same correct figure there — so yes, something was off. Also, at first the app didn’t factor in the marketplace/credit overage we had, which made me worry about audits. I was pretty sceptical at that point. I contacted support, they actually responded, identified a calculation ordering bug, pushed a fix, and after that the total matched the others and I could file for free. Not perfect — it shook my confidence — but once corrected it did the job and saved me the $50 I’d otherwise have paid.

Almost free until it wasn’t, but the finish was fine

Price

what felt like a half hour ended up closer to an hour and a half. The second surprise was money: a charge showed up near the end (almost $50), and it wasn’t clearly explained up front that the state filing would trigger that fee. I felt a bit cornered since it was the last filing day and I’d already spent the time.
The interface is straightforward overall; it asks a lot of check questions and does many automatic calculations that would have been tedious to do myself, so efficiency-wise it helped a lot. There were a few annoyances — ambiguous wording (I had to guess whether they meant “previous year” or “last year” and the support reply didn’t directly answer that, even though they did respond within 6–12 hours), and one small bug that forced me to clear and re-enter an entire category because I couldn’t edit a single line item. Those things cost time but not the outcome.
The moment I knew I was actually satisfied was after the final review screen: the summary matched my expectations, the built-in checks flagged the only real issues, and the submission went through without further hiccups. It’s not perfect, and the unexpected fee left a sour note, but in the end the software did the heavy lifting and I got the return filed correctly — which, coming from worse experiences with other companies, felt like a relief.
