Importance of Vitamins & Minerals to Your Health
Importance of Vitamins & Minerals to Your Health
Every meal we eat must contain all food classes and in the right amount according to our age and body needs. Unfortunately, not all these classes are present at every meal. Check out company reviews about diet & health online.
The foods we eat are categorized based on what their functions are to our bodies. Some need to be consumed in large amounts for proper effect while others are required in just minute amounts. The amount doesn’t diminish the importance of these nutrients. These smaller food classes play a major role in how well we grow and develop both physically and mentally.
There are over thirty types of vitamins and minerals. Each with its peculiar duty contributing to how the body system operates. It’s hard trying to keep up with all the vitamins and their alphabetic additions. We have Vitamin A, B, C, K just to name a few. Examples of Minerals include Potassium, Calcium, Iodine, Zinc and more. Sometimes a combination is known as vitamins & supplements.
What Do Vitamins & Minerals Do?
Vitamins and minerals are referred to as essential nutrients because of their roles in developing our cells and boosting our immunity to diseases. There is a need to know what vitamins & minerals do. For bone development, wound healing, conversion of food into energy and at the deepest level of cellular repair, these two nutrients are much needed.
These two nutrients are highly involved in the development of a child from birth to adulthood. In their tiny amounts, they possess powers strong enough to boost a person’s immunity enough to fight off any infection invading the body.
What Are Vitamins & Minerals?
Vitamins & minerals are also called micronutrients. They can be found in vegetables, palm oil, pepper, tomatoes and fruits. As tiny as they are their absence or reduction can cause life-threatening or incapacitating conditions especially in growing children.
Examples of such conditions that arise as a result of the absence of these micronutrients include:
a. Scurvy
This vitamin C deficiency condition causes gums to bleed easily and very harsh in children with a little amount of this vitamin.
b.
A lack of vitamin A causes blindness.
c. Rickets
A condition where the bones get curved as a result of vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is key when it comes to proper bone growth and development.
Eating foods with the right amount of these two ingredients protects bones from getting fractured easily (calcium, vitamin D and K, magnesium and phosphorus). Folic acid taken very early in pregnancy protects against birth and brain defects. Fluoride gives our teeth strong protection against cavities and in bone formation as well.
Vitamins unlike minerals can be lost during cooking, storage or exposure to air. Their chemical composition changes during these periods because of their organic nature. Minerals maintain their state all through because of their inorganic nature. Science has helped to create these micronutrients in tablets, drinks and syrups forms to balance up for what we lose in our meals.
