I was halfway through a box of moving papers when the first letter arrived, so I didn't catch it immediately. By the time I opened it I already felt that sinking feeling — a demand for money from the tax authorities, interest tacked on, and a note that the return we had been told was fine actually showed a balance owing. I had hired this franchise because I was in the middle of a separation and a local move, not exactly in any shape to parse complicated returns myself, and after a bad run with another preparer the year before I wanted someone to get it right and take the headache off my hands.
