Shaw Academy is a SCAM
I, like many others, signed up to Shaw Academy for the free trial, as I wanted to try out their trading course. I wanted to up-skill myself during the pandemic. I only wish I had looked at the review sites before I did, because I absolutely would not and should not have signed up for this scam. I hadn’t even been on the website 5 minutes when I clicked something about an e-certificate. This turned out to be a one-click purchase which charged me £39.95 immediately, without me even knowing what it was for. It didn’t even say anything about a price or purchase, I simply clicked the word ‘e-certificate’ to see what it meant and it cost me 40 quid. I then emailed Shaw Academy, asking for my money back (and came onto review sites and saw that I was not the only one upset with them). Their response makes absolutely no sense, see below:
“Your Certificate is incredibly helpful as it gives you a goal to work towards and employment. Your Certificate also provides documentary proof of your completion of this program which is very important and helps students greatly. You just have to click on the "Get E-Certificate" button to take the final assignment online and complete the final assignment with a 50% score or higher, you will receive the certificate via email.
Once the E-Certificate is activated in your account, the final assignment is made available to you immediately hence it cannot be disabled or the access cannot be revoked. Hence, we will not be able to process the refund as per our terms and conditions. Click Here to review the same in particular section 5.8.”
I haven’t even done any of the lessons yet (and don’t want to now), so why have I been charged for a certificate for an exam I haven’t even taken, never mind passed? They have credited my account with $199 to spend on their courses, which obviously I do not want, I just want my £39.95 back and to not have anything to do with this scam company again. I’ve blocked all future payments to them from leaving my bank account, and I am in the process of trying to claim the £39.95 back as loss to fraud, as this company is fraudulent, unethical and completely taking advantage of people who are looking to learn something during a global crisis.
I would not recommend Shaw Academy at all. It is most definitely a scam. There is no place to cancel your membership online, it’s way too easy to make a one-click purchase (even Amazon gives you more warning), and their emails don’t make any sense. I am upset and disappointed, and I’ll be taking this as far as I can to ensure that I get my money back.
