Solid ancestry test, would recommend
Solid ancestry test, would recommend
Qualityclear regional detail, y- and mtDNA info, and the family-matching actually worked. I bought the extra modules (the Viking/history-style ones and the Neanderthal bit) and they were priced fairly compared to other places. Customer support was helpful — Claire answered a few of my odd questions with actual detail and patience. Not perfect: the website is a touch clunky and one add-on showed up as a separate charge which confused me for a minute. Still, delivery was quick and the final results made it worth doing.
Slovenia isn’t a “West Balkan” label
Slovenia isn’t a “West Balkan” label
Qualitythe label is off — Slovenia feels Central European, not “West Balkan,” and the kit’s grouping makes that confusing. I first noticed this when a coworker sent me a screenshot of their Living DNA map and my own curiosity pushed me to check mine; a friend also forwarded theirs later, and yeah, same weird bucket. So, why does it matter? Because they lump Slovenians with Serbs, Bosnians and others and that just doesn’t match what history, culture, or genetics show — to me it reads like someone trying to simplify a messy neighbourhood with one paint colour. I’m not ranting, just pointing out that there’s real nuance here. I dug into a couple of papers (I’m one of those people who reads footnotes on a lazy Sunday) and the studies tend to place Slovenians closer to Central or Northern European groups. It’s not dramatic, but if you’re expecting a map that reflects those subtleties, you’ll be left scratching your head. Also, the “West Balkan” tag feels like a broad brush over a very diverse area — Albanians, for instance, have quite a different profile than Slavic groups, so grouping everyone together flattens a lot. That said, the test itself was easy to order and the interface is decent, I just wish the regional definitions were more research-aligned. Emotionally? Mildly annoyed, mainly because I wanted something that felt accurate to tell my aunt about at Thanksgiving — and then had to explain the mismatch. Small fix would make a big difference for people from that part of Europe.
DNA test purchase
DNA test purchase
QualityThe DNA estimate was kinda close, but the matches just seem wrong. I got British and American matches even though I don't have roots there. There's definitely something fishy with their matching system.
Living DNA kit
Living DNA kit
QualityI just got a DNA kit and the report it gave me was so cool! It showed me where my DNA comes from and even gave me info on both my mom and dad's sides. Way better than another kit I tried before. Living DNA really stepped it up with all the details and interesting info. Honestly, I was super impressed with the results and thought it was definitely worth the money.

DNA test kit
QualityThe DNA test kit I bought from Living DNA was so easy to use. The instructions were really clear and simple to follow, and I was able to collect my sample quickly and efficiently. The results came back pretty quickly and were super detailed and informative. I was really impressed with how much information they gave me and I found the breakdown of my ancestry to be both accurate and really interesting. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend Living DNA to anyone who wants to learn more about their family history.
Ancestry DNA test
Ancestry DNA test
QualityI thought the process of ordering, using, and returning the test package was easy and trouble-free. But, I have to say, I was let down by the results I got. The ancestry information I received seemed really basic and not specific to my background. It felt like it could apply to anyone. Also, the connections to present-day locations didn't match up with my family's history. There were no mentions of England, where my family has lived for ages. It seemed like the results weren't detailed or accurate enough to be helpful or interesting. In the end, I wasn't really happy with how the test turned out.

QualityOrdering my ancestry DNA test was super easy. The website was simple to use, and I had no trouble placing my order. The results I got were so helpful for my research into my family background. As a writer working on a book called Ancestral Notes and Histories, the info I got has been priceless. Right now, I haven't looked into getting any medical details because I'm really focused on digging into my family's past.
