The bottom line is that it's not just about your employees, but what you do for them and how they feel when they go home at night. You want to make sure that their work environment is healthy, safe, supported, and well-managed. Everybody wants to feel like their needs are being met in their workplace - so take these tips on board and watch your company grow into something much bigger.
Assess How Your Employees Feel In Their Workplace
It's okay if you haven't had a chance to get around to this one yet. To do an assessment, you need to be looking at the company from your employees' point of view. You can also check out a survey at this URL so that you can easily assess employee engagement. This is important because you need to know whether or not your employees are satisfied. If you have a high turnover rate, that could be an indication that people aren't too happy with their workplace environment. Your managers and even higher up the chain should also embrace this philosophy by providing feedback on how things can improve and making sure they're leading by example.
Share Creativity, Knowledge, And Passion At Work
Make it easy for your employees to show some personality at work. You want them to feel like they can express themselves while still representing the company well; you don't want somebody wearing offensive outfits, but some minor flair is okay (even encouraged). Make sure you allow them time in their schedule for personal projects and hobbies, especially if it's something that could help your business. You don't want to isolate your employees, but you do want them to be around like-minded people who they can learn from and share reflections (especially if they're doing very similar work). You also want them to enjoy the company of their peers; it makes for a great break in the day-to-day stressors of work. Remember - let them talk about stuff when they're at lunch or when they're hanging out on breaks!
Emphasize Great Communication With Your Employees
Whether it's through email or face to face, find ways that you can communicate more effectively with your employees. Some keynotes are:
Make sure they understand what's expected of them (in detail).
Have quarterly or weekly check-ins for feedback, even if it's "customer service" based. Be open to whatever your employees want to talk about; this is their time.
If you're having problems with an employee, discuss issues like adults without any animosity or passive-aggressiveness towards one another. You can also ask somebody outside the situation to be the mediator (like a senior manager) so that everybody feels heard and respected.
It Can Always Get Better
You should always strive for progress - not perfection! As long as you have employees who feel good about themselves and what they do, that's a great start - they will want to come into work every day and feel rewarded. You don't have to break the bank or spend money you don't have - just be willing to make some changes around the office, communicate more effectively, and show support for your employees! Also, don't be fooled into thinking that you can always do more; most people quit companies because they're not willing to learn and grow with the business.
Be Open To New Ideas
You may have put a lot of thought and research into an idea, but sometimes somebody on your team is going to come up with something even better than what you were planning for! Remember: great employees want their ideas to be heard, so make sure they know that brainstorming sessions are welcome and they won't be penalized for any creativity thrown around at work. If somebody has an idea that doesn't fit into your company culture or vision as it stands now, then save it somewhere where you can refer back to it later. You never know when those ideas will come in handy.
Be Consistent With Your Employees
This is where you ensure that your managers are all on the same page and treating your employees fairly, regardless of their background. For example, somebody should never be getting away with more than the rest of the team just because they're friends with somebody higher up or just because they've been there longer. You want to avoid rewarding loyalty over skill - nobody wins then! Of course, you can't expect everybody to go at the same pace either - learning curves are inevitable (and necessary). Just make sure everybody feels like they're doing a good job and it's only a matter of time before great things happen for them!
It all boils down to making sure you value your employees as much as they value the business. Everybody works hard, so make sure you reward their work ethic with a healthy and productive environment that drives them to be better people and workers. You may have a great idea for a company culture yourself - just remember that nobody wants to come into an office where they're not listened to or respected!
