Springer was founded in 19th-century Berlin, publishing political cartoons. In the early 20th century, Springer moved to science, medicine in particular. By publishing translations of Marie Curie’s work, Springer became more and more prominent before becoming the dominant scientific publisher in Germany. Springer was struck hard by WWII, as it had to fire Jewish editors and saw Ernst Springer die in a concentration camp while Fritz Springer committed suicide to avoid deportation.
Springer quickly rebuilt itself from the ground up after World War II and became more and more globalized. It fully capitalised on the digital revolution, which was also necessary because Springer was at war with libraries, who were outraged by rising subscription rates.
Springer launched Springer Open in 2004, that gave authors the option of publishing their work in an opne-access format. Meanwhile, both books and journals became available as e-journals. Today, Springer still believes in the printed book, even if it is just because of its aesthetic value. In 2015, Springer merged with Macmillan Science and Education (which includes Nature), becoming Springer Nature.
