There I was, half asleep and scrolling Amazon at 2 a.m., when my “out of print” book popped up like it never left. I had worried, before any of this, about handing my work to another company — would they look after rights, pay royalties, all that — and those worries were real. At first the new publisher sounded helpful, promised to sort back royalties and future payments, so I let myself relax. That calm didn’t last. Months of polite emails turned into silence, and not a cent showed up. I use those royalties for small stuff — groceries, a bus ticket to talks, the odd coffee while I write — so it stings. It’s been a weird mix of relief (someone kept the book alive) and frustration that the money part never materialized.

I've been noticing there aren't as many Apress books on this site lately. It feels like ever since Springer took over, there are less "legit" SWE titles to choose from. Last time I bought something, I had trouble getting the discount to work even after I put in my credit card details. When I tried to reach customer service, the call kept cutting out, and it was really annoying. So I gave up and just waited until the next day to finish my purchase, but luckily I didn't have any problems then.
