Just what we needed

Service

it’s exactly the low-key, lovely spot we needed — small, calm and no nonsense. We booked it for an August wedding because I’d been coming here as a kid and, to be frank, we needed somewhere gentle for family: my mom’s mobility isn’t great and I get flare-ups from chronic lower-back pain, so a big hotel or sprawling venue was impossible. The coordinator, Delyth, quietly sorted every detail and didn’t make a drama out of last-minute changes — that steady help was a pleasant surprise. Afternoon tea was properly good (fresh scones, real clotted cream, none of that fake stuff), and the place looks better in person than in photos. I know people moan about the no-dog rule; as a dog owner myself I miss him too, but I see why it makes sense. We’ll be back for anniversaries.

Pretty photos, poor value

Price

nice for photos, not worth the price. I went there a few weeks ago on a weekend trip and expected more — thought we'd be able to pop into most buildings and see some interiors or proper history, but it's basically a loop around colourful hotels. Tickets were about £40 each, no dogs allowed (which felt odd since it's mostly outdoors). There are a handful of tiny shops; one was advertised as "Italian food and drink" but on closer look nothing, not even the red wine, was really Italian. Accessibility is poor: no walking-aids or rental walkers, terrain is uneven and the golf buggies are reserved for hotel guests, same with pools. Good place for pictures and a quick bite, that's true, but otherwise feels like a tourist setup. I even asked if passes were annual — they're not. Not perfect, still okay for a short visit if you know what to expect.

Mid-pot reflection at the hotel tea

Product

old-world rooms, a slightly tired charm, the kind of spot you slow down for. That’s where I’ll start, though I’m jumping in mid-memory. The feel of the afternoon was a mix of comforting plates and a couple of awkward interactions. The food itself landed well — textures that worked, flavours that surprised in a good way. The smoked salmon blinis were a highlight: cool, silky salmon sitting on a warm, slightly crisp base, the caviar adding that tiny burst of salt that made it feel a bit special. The little cheesecakes were light but rich enough to finish a course; they didn’t sit heavy. The scones were generous — maybe too generous — and a bit dense, which left me thinking one each would have been plenty. The cream wasn’t classic clotted cream; it had a slightly odd, almost whipped texture that threw me off, but the jam was fine. Egg sandwiches were bland, and I even found a sliver of shell in mine, which pulled me out of the moment. Small things, but noticeable when you’re paying for the experience.
