Don't count on AXA

ClaimsI won't use AXA again. They promised evacuation help after I needed an emergency hip replacement from a hiking injury, and mostly stalled. I first heard about them from a friend who said they were reliable. We waited days for support that never showed. Calls went to hold and dropped, so we finally booked our own trip. I'm still chasing reimbursement after two months. Hospital bills mounted. It was stressful, and the follow-up has been slow. Oddly, one agent did call back and sounded genuinely sorry, but that didn't fix anything. Useful in theory, useless in practice.
Barely useful backup

Servicenot great, but somehow we got through it and I'm oddly relieved. I first saw their contact on our travel insurance card—my partner kept it in a wallet pocket—and I called at 11 a.m. to get urgent care for my son. They opened nothing useful; after that we sat around for over a day with sketchy directions and the same thin excuse every time: "lots of calls today." No clear clinic name, just polite stalling. They also encouraged paying out of pocket and promising a reimbursement later, which felt like they were dodging responsibility. In the end we found a walk-in, paid cash, and the reimbursement did arrive, eventually. So yeah, grateful it didn't blow up, but I wouldn't trust them alone next trip. Bring backup numbers and keep every receipt.

Claims
I wouldn't rely on them when something actually goes wrong. I say that even though I almost gave up on the whole idea of travel insurance after this — sketchy start, better finish, but not with them. I first heard about these folks on a backpacking forum and a colleague suggested I get a policy from them before my Europe trip, so I did — felt safe, right? Famous last words.
Mid-trip I wiped out on a set of stairs in REMOVED and ended up with both arms swollen to the point where I knew the holiday was over. I found a one-way ticket home for about $495 — cheaper than the rip-off prices I’d seen — and flew back the next day. Got x-rays at my regular doctor here as soon as I landed; lucky for me nothing was broken, but the docs treated me and I submitted a claim to get that flight refunded.
That’s where things went sideways. After a month or two they denied the whole claim, saying I should’ve used their overseas providers and called them first. I sent photos of my arms, my doctor’s notes, the ticket receipts — the whole folder — and it felt like hitting a wall. Their tone in emails was polite but basically: “nope.” I expected the usual corporate response when I posted about it, but don’t be fooled by shiny policy blurbs — the fine print matters.
Slight silver lining: I had a later issue on a cruise with a different insurer (AON) and that was handled quickly, so I know good service exists. For this company: decent sign-up, poor claims handling. I’m skeptical of any blanket praise that comes from people who never had to file anything — that’s all I’ll say.
