Lifesaver emails and sweaty sneakers

Communication

I wanted to prove to myself I could do it and raise some money for the Mohonk Preserve — but my tech skills are, uh, amateur hour. Kate popped in early on and actually gave me hope, which felt huge. Then Wes took over and was like that calm friend who shows up with duct tape and coffee. He answered fast, kept his patience when I sent embarrassing screenshots, and kept nudging things forward with other folks until the whole mess cleared up. Emails felt almost human — reassuring, clear, not robotic — and every time I thought it might fail again, Wes found another workaround. It wasn’t glamourous, but it was competent and kind, and honestly that’s what I needed. The whole process left me relieved, a bit teary (not dramatic, just grateful), and oddly happy to recommend these people. If you’re as hopeless with online forms as I am, having someone who cares makes the difference between giving up and getting your bib. Would I sign up again? Yup — now that it’s sorted, I’m excited and a little nervous, in the best way.

That weird relief at the gate

Communication

I signed up for a Metallica sweepstakes through a fundraiser (because, duh, Metallica) and donated on the Crowdrise page. First impressions were fine — the donation page was straightforward and I got a confirmation email right away, which made me feel like, okay, this is legit. I verified my info when they asked and got another message saying I’d won. Then the waiting started. I bought a plane ticket, booked a room, rented a car — all the normal, mildly panicked stuff — and emailed them when I didn’t hear anything. Every day. Because who wouldn’t worry? The day before the show I was, honestly, ready to write it off and tell my friend we’d made a sad trip for nothing. Then, out of nowhere, a short message popped up with instructions on where to pick up the prize. Not glamorous, not perfect, but I’ll never forget standing in line at the venue, ticket in hand, feeling that ridiculous, stupid relief wash over me. My guest was grinning like a kid and I actually laughed — partly from relief, partly because everything had come together at the last minute. Could they have communicated better? Absolutely. Was the whole thing stressful? Yep. But that moment, when the staff checked my name and handed over the pass, that’s when I knew it was worth it. Small emotional high, messy lead-up, but in the end it worked out.
