Wedgwood has been known internationally for more than two centuries. The company started in 1759 with the goal of being innovative and the leader in the industry of porcelain with high quality products. The founder Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) who is commemorated as 'The Father of the English Potters' was born in Burslem, Staffordshire. The region is known as the centre of the English porcelain industry. He started his carreer as an apprentice in the pottery of his brother, after which he wet working for Whieldon. After obtaining his mastership he started to work for himself in 1759.
The sale of the Wedgwood products flourished and in 1766 Wedgwood was capable of building a factory with the name Etruria. Josiah had an innovative spirit, renewal was key in his life. Throughout his carreer he created types of products which distinguish a Wedgwood from another brand of tableware. These include: Queens's Ware (1762), Black Basalt (1768) and also Jasperware (1774).
In the 19th century and important step forward was taken by the introduction of new machines, the introduction of the color biscuit but most of all by the intoduction of the product Fine Bone China, an English invention. The products of Wedgwood made by this new material beautifully decorated the tables of the notables of the world. One of them includes tableware for the White House bought by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Around the 30s of the 20th century business continued to grow and in order to work more efficient, Josiah Wedgwood found in necessary to open a new factory. This factory was built in close by Barlaston and the production started in 1940.
Nowadays, the factroy is still producing tableware, teaware and decoration with the help of the experts who work at Wedgwood.
