The worldwide retailer of office supplies, Staples, provides a broad range of items for affordable prices that can either be purchased in store or online. Staples was founded in 1986 by the collaboration of two former rivals in the supermarket industry, Leo Kahn and Thomas G. Stenberg. The idea for the superstore grew out of their combined knowledge of the supermarket industry and was prompted by Stemberg's frustration of the reliance on small, local stores for sourcing office products and stationary. Five years after opening their first store in Massachusetts, Staples started a subsidiary business in Canada under the name, the Business Depot, and began selling from stores there. However, this secondary name only lasted just over a decade, after which all stores were renamed Staples, and shortly after this the business expanded intercontinentally by opening their first Canadian store in Swansea. Just 10 years after the launch of their first store, Staples joined the Fortune 500, a list of all the largest corporations in the United States, when their sales exceeded $3 billion. One of the central features that Staples believe sets them apart from other department stores is that they offer office supplies for affordable prices, quickly and easily purchased using secure online systems. In addition to this, they greatly emphasize the importance of customer care, with 600 staff dedicated to bettering the experiences of their customers.
The Staples website offers three separate categories of products from which consumers can choose, in addition to the option of searching using brand name. The three categories of Office Supplies, Technology and Ink & Toner. The Office Supplies division offers amenities such as paper, board, furniture and diaries and the Technology section consists of products such as computers, printers, shredders and phones. Orders from staples are delivered free of charge and can be easily tracked online by simply either logging in or using your order number. Payment can be made online using Visa, American Express or Mastercard.
