The founder, Alan Scholz, began a little organization called Burley Bike Bags and moved from Fargo, North Dakota, to Eugene, Oregon looking for a cycling-accommodating community.

The Burley name was motivated by his wife, Beverly, a bike racer known as "Burley Bev." The couple sold their handmade bags at Eugene's Saturday Market, a 30-mile drive from their country home. Determined to live a car-free life, Alan needed to carry his bags and young daughter to the market by bicycle. Utilizing parts from an old swing set, he constructed the first Burley trailer. Local cyclists and bicycle shops started to notice Alan's trailer around town, and it wasn't long before orders began pouring in.

In 1978 Burley became a worker-owned co-operative. The community built a reputation for durable, safe products, and the name "Burley" became synonymous with "bike trailer." In 2006 members sold the organization to Michael Coughlin, a local community pioneer, outdoor devotee, and Oregon local. Burley gloats to be known throughout the planet for building recreational transport gear that sets the norm for durability, safety, and thoughtful design.
